Baby seats, child seats and boosters, fitted before we arrive

Getting to the airport with a young child is hard enough without carrying your own car seat through the terminal and then working out what to do with it at the other end. We fit the right restraint to the vehicle before your pickup, so it is installed and ready when we reach your door.

Whichever word you use for it, baby seat, child seat, car seat, capsule or booster, it is the same service and the same price. Tell us the age and rough weight of your child when you book and we will bring the correct one.

Which Restraint Your Child Needs

The right seat depends on the child rather than just the age, so these are guides and we confirm the choice with you when you book. The ages follow the Australian road rules for child restraints.

Seat Typical age Faces Held by
Baby capsule Birth to around 6 months Rear Its own harness
Convertible car seat Around 6 months to 4 years Rear, then forward Its own five point harness
Booster seat Around 4 years until the adult belt fits Forward The car’s lap and sash belt

Baby capsule, birth to around 6 months

A rear facing capsule for a baby who cannot yet sit up unsupported. This is what most parents mean when they ask for an infant seat, and it is the restraint we fit most often for a first airport trip. Move up when your baby’s shoulders pass the top shoulder height marker on the capsule.

Convertible car seat, around 6 months to 4 years

Fitted rear facing for younger toddlers and turned forward facing once they are big enough, with its own five point harness so your child is held properly rather than sitting under an adult seat belt. Keeping a child rear facing for as long as the seat allows is the safer choice.

Booster seat, around 4 years and up

A booster lifts your child so the vehicle’s lap and sash belt crosses the shoulder and hips where it should, instead of the neck and stomach. Most children need one well past seven, until they are about 145 cm tall and the adult belt sits correctly on its own.

Travelling with more than one child is fine. Tell us about each of them and we fit two restraints and allocate a vehicle with room for both, plus your luggage.

How the Seat Is Fitted

  1. You tell us about your child when you book. Their age, roughly their height and weight, and whether you need one seat or two. We confirm the restraint type back to you.
  2. The driver fits the seat before leaving for your pickup. It is anchored to the vehicle with the seat belt and the top tether strap, so it is secured before you ever see it and nothing is being worked out at the kerb.
  3. Check it yourself before you set off. The seat should not move more than a couple of centimetres at the belt path, and with your child in, the harness should be snug enough that you cannot pinch a fold of strap at the shoulder.
  4. You buckle your child in, just as you would in your own car, and the driver will help with anything you need.
  5. Bring nothing but your child. The seat stays with the car, so there is nothing to carry through the terminal or store while you are away.

Which Vehicles Take a Seat

A child restraint can be fitted in any vehicle we run, so choose the vehicle by how many people and bags you have, not by the seat.

  • Standard sedan. Up to 4 passengers with 2 large and 2 small bags. Suits one or two parents and a child with ordinary luggage.
  • SUV and wagon, plus $17.80. Still 4 passengers, with 4 large and 3 small bags. The usual choice when a pram and full size cases are coming too.
  • Maxi, plus $17.80. Up to 11 passengers with 8 large bags. For two families travelling together, or grandparents along for the trip.

Two restraints in one vehicle is routine. For three or more children, tell us when you book and we will confirm which vehicle takes them.

What a child seat costs

A child seat is $40 per trip, added to your fixed fare. A second seat in the same vehicle is another $40. There is no fitting fee and no deposit, and the price does not change with the type of restraint.

It has to be requested when you book rather than on the day. The correct seat needs to be fitted to the specific vehicle allocated to your booking, and a driver who arrives without one cannot solve that at the kerb.

Every seat, fitted before it reaches your child

Fitted before we arriveAnchored with the seat belt and the top tether before your driver leaves for the pickup, not worked out at the kerb.
The right restraint for your childCapsule, convertible seat or booster, chosen from your child's age, height and weight and confirmed back to you.
No fitting fee$40 per seat per trip, added to your fixed fare, with no deposit.
Nothing to carryThe seat stays with the car, so there is nothing to bring through the terminal or store while you are away.

Melbourne Airport transfers with a car seat

Most of these bookings are airport runs, in both directions. Heading out, we fit the seat before we collect you. Coming home, the seat is already in the car when we meet you, which matters when you have just landed with a tired child and a trolley of bags.

Add your flight number when you book. We track every airport pickup at no extra cost, so if you land early or your flight is delayed, your driver works to the actual landing time and you are not charged for a delay outside your control.

The seat goes to any of Melbourne’s three airports. Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine is where most families fly from. Avalon Airport, between Melbourne and Geelong near Lara, is quoted the same way, just say Avalon when you book. Essendon Fields, 8 km from the CBD, handles charter and corporate flights rather than the airlines, and a seat can be fitted for those runs too.

Do you need a car seat in a taxi in Victoria?

Legally, no. Taxis in Victoria are exempt from the child restraint rule that applies to private cars. That is the law, and it is not the same thing as a recommendation.

A properly fitted restraint is safer for a small child than an adult seat belt, which is why we offer them rather than leaning on the exemption. Children under seven are not permitted to travel in the front seat of a taxi either way.

Travelling with a pram or stroller

Prams travel free and do not count towards your luggage allowance. A folding stroller fits comfortably in a sedan boot alongside normal cases. For a larger pram, or a pram plus several bags, mention it when you book. The SUV and wagon class takes 4 large and 3 small bags against 2 large and 2 small in a sedan, and the maxi takes 8 large, both for a flat $17.80 on top of the fare.

Booking a cab with a baby seat

Book online, or call us on 0480 116 602. Tell us the age and weight of each child, whether you need one seat or two, and whether a pram is coming. We confirm the restraint type back to you, so there is nothing to sort out on the morning of the trip.

Questions

Taxi with a Baby Seat or Child Seat in Melbourne questions

How much does a child seat cost?
A child seat is $40 per trip, added to your fixed fare. A second seat in the same vehicle is another $40. There is no fitting fee and no deposit.
Do you have baby capsules for newborns?
Yes. We fit a rear facing capsule for infants up to around six months. Tell us your baby's age and rough weight when you book so we bring the right one.
Can I get a booster seat instead of a baby seat?
Yes. We fit boosters for older children, generally four to seven years, at the same $40 per trip.
Do I need a car seat in a taxi in Victoria?
Legally no, because taxis in Victoria are exempt from the child restraint rule that applies to private cars. We offer restraints anyway because a fitted seat is safer for a small child than an adult belt. Children under seven cannot travel in the front seat either way.
Can you fit two child seats in one vehicle?
Yes. Tell us the age and weight of each child when you book and we will allocate a vehicle with room for both seats and your luggage.
Can I use my own car seat?
You can bring your own if you prefer, and there is no charge for carrying it. Most people booking this service would rather not carry a seat through the terminal, which is why we fit one for you.
Does a pram count towards my luggage?
No. Prams travel free and do not count towards your luggage allowance. For a large pram plus several bags, mention it when booking and we will send a larger vehicle at no extra cost.
